In an attempt to start the new year to achieve its climate action targets Denmark's government has declared a goal to make all the domestic flights free from fossil-fuel use by 2030.
The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen in her new year’s address to the nation said that she wanted to "make flying green". She conceded that the resources required to meet the desired target are not fully aligned yet but the nation is aiming to reduce the overall carbon emissions to 70% by 2030 compared to 1990 emission levels.
While announcing the target Mette Frederiksen said that Denmark must take the lead while other nations are not initiating to cut the carbon emissions from airlines.
She also mentioned that achieving the green domestic flights target is a difficult one but the companies and researchers are currently working on solutions for the same and expect to meet them by the expected time.
As per the recent developments in this domain the European manufacturer, Airbus has declared plans to develop hydrogen-fuelled planes that could be operational by 2035 and if the company successfully generates the hydrogen using renewable energy then it will definitely pave the way for Denmark to pursue its climate action goals.
However, there are some speculations around the development of the same and the cost related will also act as a major deciding factor.
Along with Denmark, the other nations are also working on this domain to make the sky free from carbon emissions. Another European nation Sweden has also committed to making its domestic flights fossil fuel-free by 2030 & also hoping to make international flights green by 2045. France is also moving to ban domestic flights between Paris and cities including Nantes, Lyon and Bordeaux where the same journey could be made by train in under two-and-a-half hours.
