The United Nations selected 18 young men and women, for their pioneering work in India by the United Nations for a climate campaign called ‘We The Change’. As part of the ongoing COP26 conference in Glasgow, these young people have been commemorated for their contribution towards the environment.
Aged between 18 and 33, their work includes conserving water in restaurants to rescuing olive ridley turtles from trawlers, converting factory waste to fashion and using radio to spread awareness in local dialects.
One of the projects was by Garvita Gulati, called 'Why Waste?'. She popularised the #GlassHalfFull concept in which placards encourage customers to use water only as much as they need. Today, Gulhati has conserved over 10 million litres of water through five lakh restaurants.
Another inspiring initiative included Sneha Shahi's, who decided to study the Bhuki nala in her college campus, the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Gujarat. She discovered that the drain was actually a natural stream clogged with plastic. Through her affiliation with UNEP’s Plastic Tide Turner Campaign, removed 700 kilos of solid waste from it; plastic, thermocol, chips packets, bottles, industrial and construction waste.
