Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi has warned the USA about the negative effects of deteriorating US-China relations on their cooperation on climate change.
In a video call, Wang Yi explicitly told US climate envoy John Kerry that the cooperation between the two nations cannot be separated from the broader relationship and implored the US to take steps to improve ties. Wang said that both nations should maintain dialogue and communication on the basis of mutual respect and carry out mutually beneficial cooperation. Beijing has pointed to US emissions to resist action while advancing solar power and other renewable energy sources. Global decarbonizing efforts will soon be in the spotlight in the upcoming COP26, the UN global summit on climate change.
