IPPC Report cautions Ahmedabad could turn into an ‘urban heat island’ due to climate change

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report by Working Group II (WGII) warns that the impacts of climate change will continue to worsen and if we don’t limit greenhouse gases soon, we will have very little time to ensure that earth remains habitable.

The IPCC published the second part of its Sixth Assessment Report, ‘Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability’ on 28th February 2022.

For India, the IPCC report analyzed two cities – Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

The report forewarns that, in Ahmedabad, 11 million people would be at a high risk of living in an urban heat island, with much higher temperatures than nearby areas.

An urban heat island occurs when a city experiences much warmer temperatures than nearby rural areas.

However, according to the Asia fact sheet of the report, there has been "high" institutional and infrastructural progress in adapting and mitigating climate change in Ahmedabad.

The report further said, “Ahmedabad has pioneered preparedness for extreme temperatures and heat waves by developing annual Heat Action Plans, building regulations to minimize trapping heat, advisories about managing heat stress, and instituting cool roofs policy."
