Ahmedabad to have the world’s first 3D energy mapping project

Ahmedabad to have one of a kind 3D energy mapping project funded by the central government to calculate the total energy consumed by the households and industrial buildings for cooling, lighting and other uses.

The project is being carried out by the Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE) at CEPT University by using a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) equipped with five oblique angle cameras. This UAV with specialized cameras will help to capture high definition and precise georeferenced data sets of the target premises. Further, an AI-based photogrammetry software called Bentley ContextCapture evaluates this data in real-time and calculates the energy consumed by each building.

The project aims to create a standard for energy code for premises and help to develop strategies to minimize energy consumption and GHG emissions. The senior Advisor at CARBSE Rajan Rawal said, “based on this projection, policymakers can think of strategies to curtail greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) for cities”.
