According to the recent Urban Climate Vulnerability Assessment (UCVA) study backed by the Union Ministry Of Environment indicates that Ahmedabad tops the charts as far as the cities vulnerable to climate change demographically are concerned. The surprising results mentioned that Ahemdabad surpasses the major metropolitan cities of the country such as Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai which are generally at risk from climate change.
The study indicates that all seven major cities are highly exposed to the natural calamities that occurred due to climate change and global warming. The major part of the population, which accounts for about 30 per cent on average, was directly impacted by these climate change hazards, reveals the study.
The population residing in Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad each experienced one to two climate change-related events annually while Shillong and Srinagar are the ones that received more than two events annually.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has spent an ample amount of money to curb the climate change effects in the city but the data showed that climate hazard like heat waves has severely affected the locals and the demographic vulnerability of the city is the highest which is mainly constituted of the migrant population.
