On 16th November 2022, the tenth day of the COP27 at Sharm-el-Sheikh, it was Biodiversity Day at the conference.
Hence, sessions related to this focused on
the connection between biodiversity and climate change, the immediate
requirement for combined responses, and the actions taken to resolve the impact
of climate change on biodiversity.
The International Union for the
Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) expressed its deep concern at
the limited response of Parties to the request made in Glasgow to strengthen
their NDCs by the end of 2022. It urged the Parties to urgently respond with rapid
reductions in their emissions so the target of 1.5 degrees remains achievable.
In addition, the Egyptian COP27 Presidency, Germany and the IUCN launched
Enhancing Nature-based Solutions for an Accelerated Climate Transformation (ENACT),
an initiative that aims to coordinate global efforts to address climate change,
land and ecosystem degradation, and biodiversity loss through nature-based
solutions. An annual ‘State of Nature-based Solutions’ report will be produced
through the initiative to update COP28.
