COP27 Day 6: US & Egypt announce $150 million for adaptation measures in Africa

On 11h November 2022, the sixth day of the COP27 at Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, the COP27 President Sameh Shoukry and the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry co-hosted a special session on “Advancing Adaptation Action in Africa”.

At the session, Egypt and the United States announced more than $150 million in funding for climate change adaptation efforts in Africa.

It was also announced that the “Nexus of Food, Water and Energy Initiative” will receive an additional US $15 billion investment which will fund the implementation of a US $10 billion energy project, five projects for food security and agriculture, and three irrigation and water projects.

Lastly, the US also announced the launch of a new initiative to support Egypt in deploying 10 gigawatts (GW) of new wind and solar energy while decommissioning 5 GW of inefficient natural gas-generated plants.
