On 10th November 2022, the fifth day of the COP27 at Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, numerous discussions highlighted the role of science, data and research in studying and finding solutions for adapting to and mitigating climate change.
At the opening session, COP27 President Sameh
Shoukry said, “Science plays a key role in informing the climate process,
providing critical evidence and numbers to build the case for action and the
urgency of implementation. We hope that all the participants in our thematic
day on science leave with a stronger desire for finding science-based solutions
and plan for implementation that leaves no one behind.”
Egypt released its first Vulnerability
Assessment Map, driven by IPCC data, as part of Science Day at COP27. The
Global Stocktake Climate Datathon highlighted the importance of data in the
Global Stocktake in achieving the Paris Agreement's goals.
The day witnessed the launch of the report
titled “10 New Insights in Climate Science 2022”, a joint initiative of Future
Earth, Earth League and the World Climate Research Programme. The annual
reports synthesize the latest climate science-related research based on which
it makes policy recommendations. Sixty-five researchers from 23 countries
contributed to the report.
On the same day, the World Climate Research
Programme, Earth League, and Future Earth jointly released a report titled
"10 New Insights in Climate Science 2022." The yearly reports summarize
the most recent findings in climate science-related research and then offer
policy suggestions. The report was developed by 65 scholars from 23 nations.
