A new study conducted by the Researchers from the University of Exeter and the Met Office highlighted that the current rate of human-induced activities and climate actions could lead to global warming hitting the 4℃ mark by the end of this century.
According to the study, the world will keep moving towards the worst as the climate change commitments are not efficient enough to meet the Paris Agreement’s target to limit the planet’s temperature to 1.5C. Professor Betts, lead researcher of the study states that the COP26 pledges ‘have reduced the likelihood’ but the 4℃ mark is still a possible concern.
The research mentions that the deaths from heatwaves in the UK could spike by 2,000 annually to 7,200 by the 2050s and 12,800 by the 2080s. The projections pointed out in the study highlight that the current global climate change policies and the rate of greenhouse gas emissions could warm up the planet between 2C-5C approximately.
“COP26 fell short of its aims, and it is becoming less likely that we will be able to limit global warming and the Paris Agreement's 1.5C goal is slipping out of reach. We need to be better prepared for the climate changes we have already caused,” Betts added.
