As per the recent study conducted by European scientists, 2021 was the world’s fifth warmest year on record as the levels of global temperature and carbon and methane emissions were alarmingly soaring.
The report issued by the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) states that the last seven years were the biggest contributor to the rising global temperature as the year 2021 recorded 1.1-1.2C global temperature which is a significant spike from the 1850-1900 levels.
The world witnessed a momentary decline in global GHG emissions in 2020 when the whole planet came to a halt due to the deadly Coronavirus pandemic. But, soon after human activities resumed in 2021 global CO2 levels spiked by 4.9% and the world also experienced catastrophic impacts of climate change in form of floods, wildfires and other extreme weather events.
The EU scientists reported that the global levels of greenhouse gases especially carbon and methane soared up to a record high during the last year. The atmospheric CO2 levels accounted for 414.3 parts per million in 2021 which was 2.4 ppm higher from 2020, the report said.
