On 28th April 2022, 100 European Union cities pledged to significantly decrease their emissions by 2030 as part of the European Commission's 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities scheme — and will receive support from the European Union to do so.
More than 370
cities applied for the initiative, and the cities that were picked were those
that had strong strategies and a strong desire to reach the goal.
Budapest is one of
the 100 EU cities that have been chosen for the mission.
The European
commission said in its statement, “Our urban areas are home to 75% of EU
citizens. Globally, urban areas consume over 65% of the world's energy,
accounting for more than 70% of CO2 emissions. It is therefore important that
cities act as experimentation and innovation ecosystems to help all others in
their transition to become climate-neutral by 2050.”
As part of the
program, the 112 participating cities in which roughly 75 million people live will
prepare "climate city contracts" setting out action and investment
plans they intend to execute in order to achieve climate neutrality.
