‘Fridays For Future, Hungary’ organizes Global Climate Strike in Budapest

The Global Climate Strike, organized by Greta Thunberg’s ‘Fridays for Future’ movement was held across the world and in Budapest as well on the 23rd of September 2022.

A few hundred people took part in the movement, the demonstrators gathered in Batthyány square and marched to Kossuth square, where Dr. Béla Munkácsy, a researcher at ELTE TTK, and several activists also gave a speech.

The following were some of the demands that the organizers of the Global Climate Strike made:

An independent Ministry of Environmental Protection

Hungary should reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030 compared to the 1990 level.

Protection for Hungary’s lakes

At least 30% of Hungary's territory should be a nature conservation area

Restoration of local government powers

Air pollution should be immediately controlled

Sustainable transport and urban traffic reduction

Forests of the country should not be the sites of economic production, but the undisturbed habitats of the living world

Chemical-free agriculture

Environmental education
