Reuters reports that due to a rise in demand from makers of electric vehicles (EVs), the Russian aluminium company United Co Rusal International is considering supplying more low-carbon aluminium to China. Vice President Huang Wenqian of Rusal Shanghai Economic and Trade Company said, “we are highly confident about China's low-carbon demand”.
Rusal can produce four million tonnes of electrolytic aluminium annually, the vast majority of which is low-carbon and emits no more than four tonnes of CO2. A significant share of China's overall annual imports of 1.58 million tonnes of aluminium is supplied by the Russian business, which exports 400,000 to 500,000 tonnes of aluminium to the Asian nation.
Low Carbon Product Making High Impact Point
The Russian company is offering a premium of $20 to $40 a tonne of its low-carbon product at spot prices in China, according to Wenqian, who made the announcement at a Shanghai Metals Market event in Foshan, southern China.
On the London Metals Exchange in Europe, aluminium contract prices can go as high as $60 per tonne. According to Xia Ding, raw materials procurement manager at Chinese EV maker Nio highlighted that the increased demand from overseas consumers to cut emissions has caused many EV manufacturers in China to be intent on decreasing their carbon footprint. Nio proposes to employ aluminium materials with CO2 emissions of no more than seven tonnes, claims Xia.
