Need For Energy Storage Systems in India

India is pushing for a renewable energy transition to achieve its goal of cutting 50% emissions by the year 2030. As new renewable power generation systems are built, it is also important to integrate them into the grid so the green energy can be supplied efficiently and seamlessly to industry and consumers.

The Central Electricity Authority has said that energy storage systems will play an important role in the transition to renewable energy because they will ensure a seamless supply of energy during grid downtime so the consumers or the industries don’t switch to diesel-based solutions.

Building efficient storage and supply systems involve a number of policy changes regarding production and storage of excess power, it requires properly measuring  15- minute load of heavy businesses in India which they often fail to show, and also building large-scale battery stations for storage and supply.

“At the grid-scale level, energy storage is needed to efficiently manage the dynamics of demand and supply. This includes managing the short duration peak power requirement and maintaining the frequency when the grid is under stress,” says Dr. Ganesh Das, Chief – Strategy, Collaborations, Innovation, and R & D, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited
