Indian Railways is aiming for 100% electrification by the year 2030 to reduce carbon emissions and improve train operations efficiency in order to become the world’s largest Green Railway network.
The Indian Railway has its own renewable energy project which generates about 220 megawatts of power, the target is 3450 megawatts. Other initiatives like replacing old bulbs with LEDs and installing solar panels on it’s buildings have been helpful in reducing the carbon emission of Indian Railway. Indian Railways has already electrified 52,000 KM of its network it is only 13,000KMs away from total electrification.
A misconception prevails that 100% electrification will result in IR becoming carbon neutral.Since it is aiming for 100% electrification, carbon neutrality can be achieved easily as out of 20 billion KWH units that IR annually consumes, 18 billion units are accounted for by traction. This lead will increase further as no other major railways are targeting 100% electrification.
Indian Railways also has signed an MoU with CII for independent auditing on the basis of green initiatives and awards Platinum, Gold and Silver ratings accordingly.
