India At Risk of E- Waste Congestion

A mathematical model which is being called the world wide ‘waste web’ has mapped the movement of global hazardous waste for two decades and has shown India to be among 28 countries which need to get better at handling E- waste in coming years because they are at high risk of E- waste congestion.

According to a report in Nature, over 10 billion tons of E-waste are produced across the world of which only 500 million tons are toxic or harmful that pose a severe threat of environmental degradation, or are hazardous to health. 108 categories of waste were analyzed across several countries from 2001 to 2019 for the making of this report.

Of the 28 countries, 12 are in Africa, which has become the biggest graveyard of hazardous waste, followed by South Asia with nine countries, and the Middle East and Europe, with four countries each. Countries like India and China used to import lots of waste from western countries during the early 2000s and India didn’t have sufficient technology for processing waste. 

Several countries, including India, have restricted the import of e-waste and brought regulations into place in recent years.
