In an attempt to lower vehicular carbon emissions, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) announced that they are planning to equip electric-powered vehicles to collect the city’s household waste. The decision came after the appeal from Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to phase out petrol & diesel vehicles in order to lower the dependency on fossil fuels.
PMC has highlighted that two major companies have already approached the authority to facilitate the smooth transition and the first phase of the initiative will be focused on collecting household waste through door-to-door service.
Apart from the waste management department, PMC is also in charge of providing mobility resources to the cleaning department and the Fire department. Hence, the phasing out of petrol & diesel-powered engines in these departments could also be merged in the initiative.
