Melting glaciers behind devastating floods in Pakistan

The terrible monsoon rains and severe floods are causing mayhem in Pakistan. As per Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (PNDMA), more than 330 million people are affected, one million houses have been damaged and about one-third of Pakistan is submerged in water. So far, more than 1350 people have been killed in Pakistan this year, and an estimated $10 billion of damage has been done.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore have conducted research to study the causes of this catastrophe. There are more than 7200 glaciers in the Himalayan regions of Pakistan. As per the study, these Himalayan glaciers are melting 10 times faster than the rest of the world's glaciers due to climate change and global warming. Scientists found in their study that these glaciers have lost 40% of their ice sheets. The ice cover of these glaciers has declined from 28 thousand sq km to a 19,600 sq km area. The water that has come out due to the melting of Himalayan glaciers has increased the sea level of the whole world from 0.92 mm to 1.38 mm.

Due to the continuous melting of glaciers, more than 50 million people in Pakistan are facing the brunt of the floods. The situation of heavy rain has severely affected Balochistan and Sindh region and received 400 percent more rain this year than normal. Extreme rainfall filled twenty dams in the area with three times more water than usual, which flooded the area.
