In a unique attempt to spread climate change awareness among students, Kerala has decided to set up weather stations in schools. And by doing so, the state will become the first state in the country to implement an innovative education program.
As per the official report, meteorological stations are being set up in 258 schools. The initiative has been started by the General Education Department through Samagra Shiksha Kerala. According to a report published by The New Indian Express, it is one of the notable educational programs included in the Chief Minister's 100-Day Action Plan.
It will be used as a laboratory experiment on Geography subjects in all those Government Higher Secondary and Vocational Higher Secondary Schools. It is being told that if these schools are not in topographically suitable areas, then weather stations will be set up in nearby aided schools and each school will be given Rs 50,000 for the purchase of equipment.
These include a rain gauge, thermometer, wet and dry bulb thermometer, wind vane and a cup counter anemometer. Students will take readings from weather instruments and record them in the provided weather data book. With these weather stations, students will get an opportunity to understand the daily weather phenomenon in and around their school premises. Weather data collected through school weather observatories can be used for research studies and other scientific innovations. Meteorological information is essential in disaster-prone areas, so these school observatories will be useful to society.
