Tall Benches in Copenhagen help raise awareness about climate change

When you see a bench in park, you immediately think of a place to sit and relax. Almost without exception benches are made for public comfort and built in a way to be accessible to all. But if you walk the streets of Copenhagen right now, you will find benches which are unusually tall. The benches have been installed by a television broadcaster of Denmark; they are 85 cms higher than normal benches making it very difficult for people to access.

The point of this entire campaign is to make people understand about the serious ramifications of global warming. According to a report by IPCC, sea levels are expected to rise by 1 meter by the year 2100 if global warming continues. Denmark is just a few meters above sea level, and highly susceptible to flooding. People will to have to relocate to higher inland areas, which is another problem building as it would put too much strain on natural resources. A wooden plaque under the benches says “Flooding will become part of our everyday life unless we start doing something about our climate”. The campaign is an unique approach to make the public aware about climate change.
