Along with the facilities of the passengers, Indian Railways is now also focusing on making the environment clean. Indian Railways is committed to ensure that there is no pollution through railways in the country and is trying to achieve the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Railways have taken many such measures one after the other continuously for some time, in which modern rail should be known as Eco-Friendly Rail.
In the recent past, Railways has tried to completely electrify the busiest rail network in which about 142 MW solar plants and about 103 MW wind power plants have been commissioned. Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT)-based 3-phase system with regenerative braking is used in locomotives, Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) trains, Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains, Kolkata Metro rakes, and electric train sets. LED lighting has been provided in all railway establishments, including railway stations, service buildings, residential quarters, and coaches, to reduce power consumption. Apart from this, green certification of various industrial units, railway stations and other railway establishments has been done in the last few years.
