India’s carbon emissions are well under the global carbon budget: Govt

The Indian government announced that India has managed to keep its carbon emissions under the allocated global carbon budget. India emphasized that since it is a developing nation, its key priorities include development projects and poverty mitigation, and hence the country will eventually emit carbon.

During the Rajya Sabha proceedings, Union Minister of State for Environment Ashwini Kumar Choubey highlighted that India’s current annual GHG emissions are 1.96 tonnes, which is relatively one-third lower than the GHG emission rate in 2016, which was about 2.5 billion tonnes. He further added that India had only contributed 4% of the total global emissions from 1850 to 2019.

The Union Minister cited the equity and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities mentioned under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement and emphasized that the developed nations have contributed most to GHG emissions, leading to global warming, and hence, must put in more effort to curb carbon emissions.
