50% of carbon emissions could be reduced by 2030 says IPCC

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) finally released the third part of its Sixth Assessment Report on climate change on 4th April 2022. The report highlighted the urgent need to take action to mitigate climate change impacts.

Scientists have reported that from 2010 to 2019 the carbon emissions rate was at its peak but recent years have witnessed a significant decline in the rate of growth. Since 2010, the costs of solar, wind energy and batteries have seen a decline of up to 80% and the policies undertaken have helped in escalating the renewable energy targets.

The report highlighted that the rate of carbon emissions could be halved by 2030 if adequate technologies and policies are implemented in the energy sector. To achieve this target, a significant reduction in fossil fuel consumption and a boost in the electrification and use of eco-friendly alternative fuels such as hydrogen are required.

While emphasising the need of having the right approach and policies to curb carbon emissions IPCC Working Group III Co-Chair Priyadarshi Shukla said, “Having the right policies, infrastructure and technology in place to enable changes to our lifestyles and behaviour can result in a 40-70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050”.
