Human Body Size May Shrink Due To Warming

Humans may shrink and become smaller in size to cope with the growing average temperature of Earth.

Prof Steve Brusatte, a palaeontologist for University of Edinburgh has suggested that to cope with increasing temperatures humans in the past have shrunk in size as bodies with smaller frames have better chance of survival in warm temperatures and this global warming may kickstart a process that will lead to shrinking of human bodies again.

“The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area relative to their volume than plumper animals and can thus better shed excess heat,” said Brusatte

Prof Adrian Lister, of the Natural History Museum in London disagrees with this claim. He believes that the study showing correlation between warmer temperatures and shrinking of the human body is weak. As humans are not a product of natural selection anymore, we have altered our environment very much with clothes, heating and air conditioning. He also said that human beings’ existence is in trouble for other species because our activities have resulted in so much rapid change in the environment that animals in the wild may have been better off without us.
