World Set To Breach 1.5 Degree Warming Limit

According to the World Meteorological Department there is a 50-50 chance that the temperature will cross the 1.5 degree limit from pre industrial levels in the next 5 years. The likelihood of the temperature threshold to be breached in the next 5 years is 93% according to the MET office in London.

Findings of the report suggest that there has been a consistent rise in global temperatures, the effects are suppressed by La Niña events that cool the atmosphere but that doesn’t help long term global warming. The chances that the average temperature of the next five years will cross the 1.5 degree threshold is very low (about 10%) but the chance of one in five years exceeding the warmest year on record is 48% (the current record for warmest year is 2016).

“This study shows – with a high level of scientific skill – that we are getting measurably closer to temporarily reaching the lower target of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The 1.5°C figure is not some random statistic. It is rather an indicator of the point at which climate impacts will become increasingly harmful for people and indeed the entire planet,” said WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas.
