Germany Aims 100% Renewable Energy by 2035

Germany is under great diplomatic pressure from the members of the EU, the US and other NATO countries to reduce its Russian oil consumption after Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Germany’s energy demands were met mostly by Russian oil and coal supply, it has one of the largest shares of Russian energy imports of all EU countries, and it is the largest European economy.

Germany was supposed to phase out its last nuclear power plant by the end of this year owing to the heavy stigma around nuclear reactors among people of the country, it also aimed to go 100% renewable by the year 2040. 

In a strange turn of events last week, Germany declared that it’ll turn the energy production to 100% renewable by 2035 which is 5 years earlier. It also signaled in the direction of not phasing out nuclear power entirely.

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner has referred to renewable electricity sources as "the energy of freedom".Germany also halted the Nord Stream 2 project that connects Russia and Germany through an oil pipeline via the Baltic Sea.
