Africa to Advance Renewable Energy: How?

More than half of Africa's population lacks basic access to power, which poses a hurdle to long-term development. To address this issue without aggravating global warming, Rwanda and Germany collaborated to create the Renewable Power Plant Database Africa. This database focuses on the possibilities of renewable energy sources such as hydro, wind, and solar.

According to the database, countries like Nigeria and Zimbabwe can transition away from fossil fuels by 2050, with renewables capable of covering 76% of Africa's electricity consumption by 2040. While hydropower has traditionally dominated, the decreasing costs of solar and wind power make them viable alternatives.

Transnational electricity pooling, integrating diverse stakeholder interests, implementing hybrid renewable solutions, and promoting cross-border data interchange and cooperation are among the recommendations. By employing these strategies, African countries can set a global example for others to follow in their transition to a sustainable energy future.
