The Russia–Ukraine conflict, apart from being a failure of diplomacy and a humanitarian crisis is also turning out to be an environmental disaster. It’ll pollute the air, water and soil of the cities that are affected and surrounding areas.
The attack on urban centers and industrial complexes is resulting in plumes containing fine concrete, hazardous gases due to burning on paints and plastics, shards of glass, lead, asbestos etc. It happened in the 9/11 attack on New York City.
The stability of the Chernobyl nuclear plant has also been compromised risking radiation leakage that could last for decades and make everything inhabitable, apart from this many mines have been flooded which will result in leakage of methane and other toxic gases and mixing of metals into groundwater which will pollute the water table.
Head of the Ukrainian delegation to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Svetlana Krakovska, said “Tomorrow and next week, space in the media will compete between speaking on novel findings and measures to adapt and build a climate-resilient future - and news on war against Ukraine. But it was not our choice. Let me assure you that this human-induced climate crisis and the war against Ukraine have direct connections and the same roots,”
