MNRE to Install Solar Grid for Tribal Habitations

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has changed its criteria for implementing the PVTG solar power program under the PM JANMAN project.

The revisions seek to increase the program's effectiveness and reach by broadening the electrification scope, allowing solar mini-grids to power clusters of families rather than individual SHLS installations. MNRE will provide up to ₹50,000 (~$600) in financial help for each unelectrified family served by the mini-grid.

The updated standards also add flexibility to implementation modes, allowing for both Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and RESCO types of mini-grid deployment. This enables implementing agencies to select the most appropriate method depending on local circumstances and resources. The President of India has approved the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which has a budget of approximately $9 billion (₹750.21 billion).
