Environmental groups have raised concern over Rajasthan CM Ashok Gahlot's request to Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel to expedite the blocks over coal processing. The demand prodded by environmental activists is to declare the complete Hasdeo forest region a legally protected area, as it is a significant elephant habitat.
Over the years, mining activities have caused land clearings and increased human-elephant conflict in the Northern area, thus affecting elephant populations to a large extent. Like many other states, Rajasthan is also facing an energy crisis, so to prevent further blackouts, the CM of Rajasthan urged to clear the roadblocks from the development of Kente extension and Parsa coal blocks in a letter. The Central Government had allocated 3 coal blocks to Rajasthan Vidyut Utpadan Nigam in Chhattisgarh back in 2015, but only one of the three has been able to begin to develop. But the environmental activists are protesting that the entire Hasdeo area is a dense forest and should be entirely declared as a protected area.
