Niti Aayog released the first ever list of Sustainable Development Goals Urban Index on Tuesday, and it was topped by Shimla. The Central government's public policy think tank analyzed urban local bodies (ULBs) across 56 cities based on 77 SDG indicators. The research was aimed at the local application of SDGs and ensuring their effective monitoring at city level .
According to the SDGs Urban Index, Dhanbad was at the bottom of the list, while New Delhi stood at 20th position with Raipur. Pune, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore and Chandigarh are among the top 10 cities in terms of implementation of SDGs. Chennai and Bengaluru were ranked at 11th and 13th, Mumbai stood at 33rd position and Kolkata performed poorly with the bottom 10 cities at 48th position. Cities are becoming centres of growth. The SDG Urban index is an innovative partnership between NITI Aayog and GIZ, and goes a long way in establishing a stable SDG monitoring system in our cities. The assessment of the ULBs was on 77 indicators including parameters such as health, poverty reduction, women empowerment, education, water and sanitation, economic growth and clean energy. 44 out of 56 urban units have a population of more than one million and 12 are with a population less than a million. There are 17 sustainable development goals per SDGs aimed to "achieve a better and more sustainable future for all” that were formulated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.
