The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have announced a new phase of collaboration to monitor COP28 energy outcomes, reach consensus on 1.5°C transitions, and support the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
The two organisations will concentrate on three key areas: tracking and reporting on the energy-related outcomes of the first Global Stocktake at COP28, achieving consensus on actions to deliver 1.5°C-aligned energy transitions, and assisting with the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
The IEA will publish a report ahead to the COP29 summit summarising worldwide progress towards the energy pledges agreed at COP28. The UNFCCC and IEA will also collaborate to promote positive outcomes from the new series of COP-IEA High-Level Energy Transition Dialogues, which will take place throughout 2024 in preparation for the COP29 meeting in Baku.
The UNFCCC and IEA will also collaborate to provide policy advice and technical support for the creation of energy-related targets consistent with the Global Stocktake conclusion and the Paris Agreement's aims.
