The elected COP27 President and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, HE Sameh Shoukry addressed climate envoys and delegates at the opening plenary.

The COP27 had a historic start as on the first day itself, loss and damage funding was officially included in the COP Agenda.

The term ‘Loss and Damage’ is used to describe the manifestation of climate change impacts which are not or cannot be avoided by adaptation and mitigation efforts and also refers to the policies and plans that are used to address loss and damage, such as those that are negotiated at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The island country of Vanuatu first brought up 'Loss and Damage' as a demand in 1991.

Indian Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav had said in September earlier this year that ‘Loss and damage’ due to climate change will be a major topic for India’s discussions at COP27.
