Ahead of COP27, Cairo attempts to shed the tag as one of the world’s most polluted cities

Ahead of COP27, Cairo attempts to shed the tag as one of the world’s most polluted cities. As Egypt prepares to host the COP27 climate change conference city of Sharm El Sheikh in November, its capital Cairo is likely to be in the limelight as well.

Air Quality

The 2021 Egypt Human Development Report says, “Air pollution constitutes a chronic problem in Cairo due to the growing population, uncontrolled rural migration, rapid urbanization, and the presence of a large number of publicly owned chemical, metallurgical, and other heavy industries near residential centers,”

In an effort to limit pollution, the government recently began collecting and recycling rice straws. The six-year ‘Greater Cairo Air Pollution and Climate Change Project’ was signed by the  government and the World Bank in September 2020. The $200 million project aims to lower car emissions, improve solid waste management, and strengthen the air and climate decision-making system.

Waste management

Cairo's waste management problem originates from a number of issues, including a lack of coordination and clear responsibilities among several government organizations, the absence of a formal garbage segregation system, and low public awareness.

Waste collection, transportation, storage, and processing are now regulated by legislation enacted in 2021, with consequences for noncompliance.

Plastic Bank, which began operations in Egypt last year, collects plastic bottles, converts them into other plastic forms, and sells them to customers mainly in Europe and North America.
