Like any other major city, Budapest uses a lot of decorative lighting to beautify the city, especially the statues and monuments of cultural value. Such beautification is enjoyed both by the residents as well as the tourists.
However, decorative lights consume a lot of energy and lead to a lot of emissions. Displaying sensitivity to the same, Budapest decided to switch off its decorative lighting two hours earlier than usual from the 1st of September 2022.
The capital provides high-level decorative lighting at nearly 300 objects, which from now on can be enjoyed by the citizens of the capital and visitors to Budapest until 11 PM during the summertime and until 10 PM during the winter time (instead of the current 1 AM and 24 hours respectively).
Shortening the duration of decorative lighting is expected to result in annual energy savings of approximately 792,510 kWh. Taking into account the market price of electricity on August 15 (HUF 285/kWh), this represents a cost saving of about HUF 226 million, according to the general assembly proposal.
This will not only help save a lot of energy and hence reduce electricity prices but will also help in climate mitigation by reducing carbon emissions.
