Food waste is a major issue in Romania. According to UNEP data for 2021, Romanians discard roughly 74 kgs of food per capita each year. Every day, around 6,000 tons of food or approximately 10% of the total sold is disposed of in landfills.
However, residents of the cities of Bucharest and Cluj are slowly changing that through ‘Bonapp.eco’, a responsible shopping mobile app that aims to combat food waste by connecting consumers with retailers that sell food products that are close to their expiration date.
The mobile app lets users buy food, sweets, and drinks that are approaching their expiration date, at a discount of 40% to 80%. Consumers can purchase items directly from the app, which is available on iOS and Android.
The partners of Bonapp.eco include, among others, Glovo, Noodle Pack, Donuterie, Cora, Penny Romania, Starbucks, Narcoffee Roasters, Shanghai, Lemnul Verde, as well as independent outlets.
Over the past 10 months since the app’s launch, the users of Bonapp.eco have saved about 7.5 tons of food, representing a reduction in carbon emissions of more than 15 tons of CO2, the equivalent of what a diesel-powered car would emit driving around the Earth twice through the Equator.
