AI to Keep Food Waste in Check

According to the 2021 Food Waste Index Report 35%-50% of food is wasted globally and 5% to 17% of it can be attributed to the food-service industry. Orbisk, a Netherlands-based tech start-up offers a solution through its waste tracking system.

Using an AI system, its cameras track each food item that is discarded into a waste bin. The wasted food is then identified and a scale weighs the amount that is being discarded. Orbisk’s hardware is installed in bins in the restaurants and cafeterias as well as hotel and industrial kitchens. The data offered by Orbisk allows business operators to gain an understanding of both the individual sources of food waste as well as their respective volume.

This can help in identifying the major waste producing areas, and in the long run help businesses save money, Orbisk claims it to be approximately €200 in food acquisition costs per 30-60 kg of wasted food. By 2025, it plans to save over 100 million kg of food.
