The Greater Chennai Corporation has initiated proactive trash management measures such as door-to-door segregation programs and improved public awareness about various sorts of waste.
Residents were educated about electronic trash, hazardous garbage, biodegradable waste, and non-biodegradable waste by Corporation officials. Residents were encouraged to divide waste into various bags and to dispose of electrical and sanitary waste during weekly waste collection operations.
The city has been dealing with an estimated 1.25 lakh tonnes of waste since December 4, spanning beaches and estuaries, with a daily burden of 6000 metric tonnes. In response, the commissioner asked locals not to litter and instead to bring over their trash to Corporation employees.
The municipal corporation has given a letter of intent to a provisional bidder to develop a waste facility at the Dadumajra garbage dumping site in a strategic move. The facility is expected to cost 10 crore, with the Municipal Corporation providing water and power connections at the bidder's location. The bidder expects the plant to open by the end of January or early February, with operations lasting two years. This project demonstrates the municipality's dedication to effective trash management and highlights its efforts to improve the city's cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
