A four-degree rise in temperature of earth and Alexandria could disappear beneath the waves: Boris Johnson at COP26

Following a comment made by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson while attending the COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, a feeling of unease pervaded Egypt. He said, “When the temperature rises only 4 degrees, we will say goodbye to entire cities, which are Miami, Alexandria, and Shanghai, they will all sink underwater.”

Alexandria Governor Mohamed al-Sharif said in a televised address that the governorate has been experiencing an upsurge in torrential rain rates since 2015, producing a number of concerns. He stated that the state is making concerted steps to address climate change, primarily by erecting concrete walls to safeguard beaches and other sites that may be vulnerable to rising water levels.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad urged major industrialized countries, which have the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions, to lead by example and start working to reduce these fast-paced emissions and to commit to paying an annual sum of $100 billion agreed upon to assist developing countries in addressing climate change, in addition to the $1 trillion long-term financing plan, to meet the basic requirements to confront the problem.

In televised statements, Fouad confirmed that Egypt is working at a rapid pace to address climate change, while it contributes only 0.06% of the carbon emissions globally.
