The new UN report highlights that human-induced activities and behaviour is causing detrimental impacts on climate change and resulting in an increase in the number of climate disasters globally. The ongoing global scenario is increasing the risk to millions of lives and socio-economic developments.

The report mentioned that the past decade witnessed about 350 to 500 medium- to large-scale disasters every year and the number is going to spike up to 560 disaster events annually. Apart from the loss of lives, these disasters have negative impacts, especially on developing countries. These countries face an average of 1 percent decline in their GDP and about 0.1-0.3 per cent in developed countries because of these disasters every year.

While highlighting the need to address the lack of investment in the adaptation strategies, Mami Mizutori, Head of UNDRR said, “Disasters can be prevented, but only if countries invest the time and resources to understand and reduce their risks”.
