In an attempt to escalate the target of phasing out single-use plastic from India by 2022, the central government ordered to ban several single-use plastic items from 1st July. The regulation passed under the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021 prohibits manufacturing, importing, stocking, distribution, sale and use of identified single-use plastic items, which have low utility and high littering potential, all across the nation.
Single-use plastic items as the name suggests are used only once by the consumer before disposal. The petroleum-based plastic items are difficult to recycle as the addition of new virgin material is required in the recycling process. Hence, these plastic items pollute the ocean and land when not dumped responsibly. The government has taken this measure to curb the pollution spreading from single-use plastic items. The released list of items by the centre includes earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (Thermocol) for decoration, plastic plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straws, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron, stirrers.
