The largest hydroelectric plant in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been blocked by the plastic waste accumulated near the turbines.
The Ruzizi dam established at the majestic Lake Kivu is facing a tragic condition as the plastic waste such as bottles, cans are piled up in thousands of numbers and formed a 14-metre deep plastic waste sheet.
The production manager of the dam highlighted that the impact is huge as they have a “deficit of 6.3 megawatts” out of a total of 30 MW production requirement for the neighbouring province of North and South Kivu and also for the other parts near Burundi. A generator failure at the Ruzizi power plant is also caused by plastic pollution which has caused an absence of 20 MW from the distribution network, he further added.
