A workshop held at the National Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal on the ill effects of microplastics on food security and sustainable development highlighted that microplastics reaching the fields can become a big threat to our health. The two-day workshop was organized under the Global Challenges Research Fund project of UK Research and Innovation.
The researchers mentioned that this is becoming a global problem. Therefore, it is necessary to understand this problem and take steps to solve it. Dr Ashok K. Patra, Director of the Institute, highlighted the importance of poly-mulching and said that farmers have to be told about the disadvantages of microplastics.
Department Head Dr Ajay informed that a database of farmers using poly-mulching or poly-house is to be prepared. For this, "Kobo Tool Box" software has been created. Through this, a team is collecting data on microplastic pollution in all the villages around Bhopal and aims to find out some concrete facts.
