A new study conducted by the researchers of the National Institute of Standards and Technology revealed that the disposable cups coated with low-density polyethylene shed trillions of microplastics after coming in contact with water at 100°C. LDPE is a soft flexible plastic film which helps it to retain its shape when contacted with liquid.
The researchers analyzed the nanoparticles by taking out the water from the disposable cup and spraying it out into a fine mist. Further, this was left to dry and the isolated nanoparticles were taken out from the rest of the solution. This technique was also used to detect tiny plastic particles in the atmosphere.
NIST chemist Christopher Zangmeister highlighted that the study conducted revealed that there are plastic particles wherever we look and about trillions of nanoparticles per litre. But, the negative impact of these nanoparticles on human health when consumed is still not confirmed.
