Pilkington UK & Vertex Inks Offtake Agreement For Low Carbon Hydrogen

A "Heads of Terms" offtake agreement for low-carbon hydrogen has been signed between Vertex Hydrogen and Merseyside glass maker Pilkington UK. With the completion of two world-first trials of hydrogen being burnt in a glass furnace, St Helens' Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, a unit of the NSG Group, has led the flat glass industry in the conversion to low carbon fuels.

Vertex said in a statement that the agreement "sets Vertex up to supply hydrogen to Pilkington UK as the firm continues to develop low-carbon ways of creating glass."

In 2021, Pilkington oversaw a world-first testing of flat glass made from hydrogen at its renowned St Helens factory. Pilkington has always been regarded as a pioneer in the glass business. In the north, the offtake agreement is another well-known moniker.

Net Zero Emission Vision By 2050

According to Joe Seifert, CEO of Vertex Hydrogen, "the offtake deal represents another well-known name in the northwest manufacturing sector converting to Vertex's low carbon hydrogen.”

He further added, "Our NSG Group aim of attaining net zero by 2050 has our complete commitment. Our plan to cut carbon emissions includes using hydrogen instead of natural gas to fire the float glass furnace.”

According to Neil Syder, managing director of Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, "decarbonizing the glass-making process poses a huge challenge, so it's vital that we engage with academics and industry groups, particularly here in the North West.”

As a crucial component of HyNet, the UK's top industrial decarbonization cluster, Vertex is pleased to support the UK's leadership in the development of low-carbon hydrogen generation. The critical need to significantly cut carbon emissions in the manufacturing sector will be resolved, protecting and advancing a crucial industry.
