In December, India's coal-fired electricity generation increased by 15.03% to 98,443 million units (MU), according to government statistics. Coal-based power generation, which accounts for 76.59% of the nation's overall power generation, was at 85,579 MU in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal.
According to the coal ministry's monthly data for December 2022, both the production of power using coal and the production of power overall increased year over year. On December 22 compared to December 21, "coal-based power generation has registered a gain of 15.03 percent, and overall power output on December 22 has been 13.65 percent greater than the power generated in December'21," the report stated.
Similar to this, total power generation increased by 8.90% in December of last year to 1,28,536 MU from 1,18,029 MU in November 2022.
Coal-Based Power Generation Important For India
However, lignite-based electricity generation decreased slightly to 2,227 million units in December from 2,272 MT in the same month of the previous year.
In comparison to the same month the previous year, the amount of electricity produced by hydroelectric power grew by 5.94% to 9,132 MU.
One-fourth of the nation's electricity is provided by NTPC, which previously stated that coal-based electricity generation will continue to be the backbone of the nation's power supply for the next 20–30 years.
India should concentrate on dispatchable renewable energy, according to the business, rather than discussing the gradual closure of thermal coal power stations.
The PSU preferred operating new coal-based thermal power plants over operating outdated and inefficient ones because they are more environmentally friendly.
