The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore on the Haryana government for the damage caused to the environment. Orders have been issued to Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal to deposit this amount in Haryana Pollution Control Board within a month.
A nine-member committee has been formed to spend this amount on environmental upliftment. The NGT has also said in its order that if Eco Green Energy Private Limited is not doing its work properly, then the agency should be changed by taking action as per the terms of the agreement.
On September 23, the hearing of the petition of environmentalists Vivek Kamboj, Vaishali Rana Chandra and Poonam Yadav, headed by NGT chairman Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel. The NGT said that in the report given by the Haryana Pollution Control Board on September 20, it has been said that garbage is being dumped in the Aravalli mountain range. The NGT issued orders to the committee that departmental action should be taken in this matter. The NGT had constituted an inquiry committee. The Committee reported that there is a mountain of garbage 38 meters high on the spot. 33 lakh metric tonnes of garbage are lying. From Faridabad 900 tonnes per day and from Gurgaon 1100 tonnes per day is reaching garbage. 15000 metric tonnes per day of garbage disposal equipment was to be installed, which was not followed. In December 2023, talk of treating all the garbage was done by the Chief Secretary, but the equipment was not increased.
