Nepal is trying to shift its current Everest base, which is at about 5000mts due to thinning of glacier ice due to rise in temperatures.
A team of researchers have been warning about the thinning of ice on Mt Everest’s glaciers. According to scientists the glaciers have been melting at an alarming rate of 2 meters every year, they are expected to disappear by the middle of the century if this pace is sustained. The International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) had said that Everest has been losing ice significantly since the late 1990s, citing a latest research report.
Mountaineers have pointed out that a stream of water that flows by the Everest base camp is becoming increasingly wide because of the increased flow of water from melted ice. The increasing number of people on the Everest base camp has also been cited as one of the reasons for the deterioration of the ice sheet.
The new base is proposed 400 meters lower than the current base and that will increase the length of the climb for mountaineers.
