This webinar featured data from the Air Quality Life Index, a recent update by the Energy Policy Institute (EPIC) of the University of Chicago.  Maharashtra is currently standing at number 15 in the country in terms of pollution.  In the webinar held on Thursday, the increasing pollution level in the air in Maharashtra was talked about.

According to data from the Air Quality Life Index presented in the webinar, PM 2.5, the most pollutant particle, averaged less than 20 micrograms per cubic meter in 1998, but has risen to 38 micrograms per cubic meter in 2020.  According to the index, if Maharashtra reaches an average of 5 micrograms per cubic meter of PM 2.5 set by the World Health Organization, the life of every citizen here increases by 3.3 percent.

According to the report, to achieve this reduction in pollution levels, work needs to be done in all sectors.  Industry, power plants, transportation, waste management, construction, cooking include everything from clean options to dust control.  According to the Air Quality Life Index, the life expectancy of the people of Maharashtra has also decreased in the last two decades due to the increase in the level of pollution in the air.  The average reduction in life span in the state was 2 years in 1998, which has increased to 4 years in 2020.
